Configuring Continuous Release

I have my 5100 set for Continuous Release. I press the shutter button and only get one shot when I hold it down. For more exposures I have to manually release and press the button as if it were in single shot mode. Any ideas on the problem? I'm wondering if it's a defective camera or a setting I'm missing.

Just to be sure, is it definitely on continuous mode? I had this same "problem" several weeks ago, but found that I had somehow neglected to save the choice when I thought I had. Just a thought, good luck.

How good is your memory?

I mean your memory card. Depending on on the image format you are at the buffering time may be slower than the continuous mode requires to write to the card.

The memory access light will be lit while the buffering is going on. A low battery , full card and possibly depending on focus mode the camera could be trying to find focus points.
