The Pup and I got up early and drove up to the Columbia Zoo. Got a few decent shots. Have more to edit, but these seem to be the initial cream of the crop. No pun intended.

Got out today with the Pup. The morning started with a misting rain, which went away pretty quickly. Overcast persisted. Made for some soft light and rain drops on flowers. Tried a few fringe techniques. Took some pics for our club's Oct scavenger hunt. And, of course, shot subjects that presented themselves.

Here are a couple ICMs I tried. One of the items on the scavenger list was red leaves. I will probably choose the first one, since it has a scary face in the center. Well, maybe if you squint. Really hard.

I don't normally shoot a lot of flowers, but they were particularly inviting this morning with the soft light and raindrops.

This one will fulfill the sunflower category for the scavenger hunt. It's a group of swamp sunflowers. I like the ethereal look of the severely out of focus flowers, and the central sharp butterfly. This was my favorite shot of the day.

This juvenile little blue heron had a great texture look and didn't seem to mind me creeping down the bank to get a few shots. I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Correct me if I am wrong.

Discovered a new place to go shoot that's very close to the house. It's a walking trail with numerous retention ponds along the way. It's landscaped with a variety of plants and a number of trees. Wrong time of year, but there was enough to keep me there for well over an hour. I'm thinking in the late spring/summer there may be a large number of dragonflies perching on foliage lining the ponds. Saw a bunch of insects on the camellias, and I'm sure there will be a fair amount of insects for macro work in the warmer months. Among the trees, I saw quite a few warblers, wrens, a couple mocking birds and even a red bellied woodpecker. There were a few wading birds, although no ducks or geese. Ironically, it is bordered on one side by the interstate, but most of the wildlife just ignores it. I may wander down there this weekend in the morning. I think the light will be better.

These are nothing to write home about, but I think with a little more familiarity with the area, I can do much better.
