What I wanted to capture with this photo is the cross in contrast with the ocean background and I wanted to include the traditional Bermudian roof.

I know the composition does not follow the rule of thirds but I think based on what I wanted to show I could not follow that rule.

I wish the image was sharper. Not sure if it is the settings, lens or camera.

I shoot with a Nikon D80 sigma 18-200 lens f/3.5-6.3

I really like the image, it has very nice structure to it as well as lines. The thing that is doesn't really have is balance. There's a ton of stuff on the left side with virtually nothing to balance it out on the right. Do you see what I mean? Perhaps if you moved the line of sight over to that some of the roof structure was holding down the right side with your main subject there on the left, be it the cross or whatever item you wanted the viewer to see first, it would give the image a bit more balance and not make it feel so left of center heavy. I think Don's cropping is an attempt to pull some of the left into the center but even then it's still left heavy.

But as far as subject, I really do like it. It looks very Greece-like Orthodoxy type building with strong lines, very nice!

Thanks Don... I notice by cropping the sky it makes a quite a difference.

Dave, I was trying to get as much ocean in the shot as possible, thinking the cross would stand out more sorta like the cross 'looking' over the ocean (not sure if I am explaining it right). I will take your advice and shoot the scene again tomorrow, this time I will bring try to balance the shot a bit more.

Thanks for the advice guys!

If it were me, I'd crop most of the ocean on the right out of the image leaving the cross the primary focus of it. The way the image is now, the viewers eye is drawn to the open area on the right and not the cross. You want the viewer to focus want the lines of the cross and roof, not the ocean. I'd also consider cropping teh sky down to the top of the clouds to really draw the viewers eye to the cross.

You might try just changing the aspect ratio to 8x10 and keeping everything on the left. I think as long as you leave a strip of ocean on the right it will preserve the feel you were looking for.

Another idea if you shoot this again is to keep the cross either completely above or below the horizon. You don't want the horizon cutting the subject.
