Challenge

I'm relatively new on here and was wondering, that if in addition to a weekly challenge, that maybe a month long challenge could be issued. One that ran from like the 5th of the month until the 25th of the month and people could only click the like tab on one photo (if someone votes more than once all of their votes are thrown out) from the 26th to the last day of the month (28th in Feb or 29th if it's a Leap Year, or the 30th or 31st if its a regular month) results totaled by a moderator or one of their reps and the winner announced on the 2nd of the following month with the winner issuing a new challenge on the 3rd/4th of the following month. 1 entry per person. 1 vote per person.
Just a thought!

I like this. The only thing I would change would be "in addition to"... :) For me, it would be one or the other. I'm inclined to have it once a month. I also like Marcel's idea of calling it an assignment instead of a challenge. But....as always....we have to get the OK and go ahead from da bossman....jdeg. :)

Once a month would be easier on the moderators. And probably the entrants too. And assignments sounds neat as well, kind of like homework to get better at photography.
Plus I have seen on some sites that they have the ability to put a secret vote tabulator on the page at the close of the contest entry period. Maybe something like that could be done. So instead of clicking like, you actually click a button next to the members name and photos name/description. That way nobody knows who voted for what unless the Mod wants them too.

I really like this "secret vote" idea. This would make the judging a lot easier for the moderator. Right now we still have to use our personal taste and this was questioned lately.

I like the secret vote idea also, as long as it can be limited to one vote each member. Might be a good idea to end it and then have a vote day. This way folks posting near the end have equal chance.

I personally have an aversion to a vote as it becomes more of a popularity contest of sorts. I think the Judges descision should still use a vote as a guide/tiebreaker/etc hbut the photo should still be judges on the criteria of a good photo and also how it fit's within the theme of the challenge.

I would still prefer "judging" and I do not believe we should be questioning the judges "taste". He/she who does can volunteer to be a judge..

Just my 2 cents worth an d coming from a NH Rookie, well it may only be worth a penny!

As mentioned in another post.. I prefer judging by a qualified Photog.. but having said that, I would also support a vote if handled as ricj suuggested.. Assure one vote and have a day after closing so all have equal chance.. If they are all in a Gallery, users can select photo easier than scrolling through the entire thread.

This must be my other penny!! :)

A lot of things have been said so far on this. Please let me try to give you a few thoughts.

First, we have to decide if we want to have this kind of "challenge/assignment" to be a contest with winner/s. Or do we want this a some kind of exercise to encourage our members to improve their photographic skills? Should this become a popularity contest for egos or a community effort to promote photography?

I think we have to answer these questions before we decide on the actual format and/or voting models.

Our society is so "media" driven with elections, polls etc, that maybe, just maybe, it would be nice to just be creative and let people decide for themselves what they do prefer without having to decide for them what the "winning shot" should look like.

Food for thoughts.

I agree with this also and I think that's why it ended up being a combination of likes and judging. Unfortunately, there will be no perfect solution where everyone agrees.
