Hello all,
I wanted to give you a little insight from my initial thoughts on the Case Logic Kontrast KDB101. I was looking for a new bag to go traveling with that would allow for either a spare body and have enough space to carry multiple lenses, a laptop computer/tablet and was budget friendly. My previous bags were side carry and my favorite when street walking a Lowepro Flipside 300.
So the CL Kontrast KDB101 definitely not my first choice when it comes down to carrying my precious cargo, but for the money it may have a few options which I did like and did sway me away from getting another bag.
Now what it was made to carry..
Camera body 8 lenses/flash, laptop and tablet. Now the big question was can it fit all of this? Yes it absolutely can. I brought along with me a bag full of lenses when I went to initially see the bag and put it through a quick ringer. Loaded with my D300s gripped, 70-200, 85mm, 50mm, 35mm and SB700, I was armed with my go to lenses and body. Did it fit it all, absolutely....
The bag has plenty and I mean plenty of room for gear. I could have also brought along with me an SB600 and 800 to fill the bag as if I were going to do a shoot.
The quality of the bag I will say is better than "OK". Stitching is on par with most of the higher priced brands. The zipper draw strings where also shrink wrapped to prevent unraveling of the strings (Something I probably would not prefer to see, albeit not so much an eyesore). Straps are of a good nylon variety. Solid impermeable bottom, so that if you are out and about, placing the CL Kontrast on the floor would not be affected by any wet substances. Now this also doubles as a good support and can nicely hold the bag in place. So you can be well assured that your equipment will stay nice and dry.
Now to add to the goodies.... There are lots of pockets.... Pockets for everything imaginable (memory cards, cleaning equipment etc). There is also side straps for attaching your tripod and mesh pockets to hold other necessities. The shoulder straps are padded for comfort and it also comes equipped with a sternum strap with pinch lock. This helps add to comfort so you would not fear the shoulder straps sliding down making an uncomfortable carry on your back.
Now the not so goodies... A few quirks about the bag which would definitely need an improvement and addition to. The bag itself could use a waist strap. Now while the shoulder/sternum straps will make sure that the bag will not go anywhere, added security on the bag and a comfort level of not letting the bag bounce around on your lower back would help. While I did not experience this in my short time, this would be something I would have liked to see utilized.
The interior dividers are very sturdy, however I personally would also liked to see a softer divider for the extra level of padded protection. While the dividers themselves are padded I feel that if you are active with moving the likelihood of shaking and/or jarring while moving is less likely to happen when there is a bit more flexibility in the padding.
Now, I know that most of you would have a complex with the thought of using a Case Logic bag, however this is a big step above their regular offerings seen at most stores. The reason why I say that is for this reason.... If you are not aware of who Case Logic is, it is a company under the Thule group. For those that recognize the name, Thule makes bicycle racks/luggage compartments/roof racks etc.
This is the kind of bag where you actually end up seeing a bit of influence from individuals that were looking for a different type of bag, something that can hold up in moderate weather without worries.
So I will leave this open ended while I put the bag through a few more paces in the upcoming weeks and give a final review on my thoughts.
