Carrying alternatives

Once again I come here picking everyones brains.

I am about to get a D800 (I hope) but I want a comfortable strap to carry this camera with the 28-300 lens.

In recent months I have got used to winding my neck strap around my wrist a few times with my D5100 when we are out on long walks for a couple of reasons... firstly its more comfortable to walk with the camera NOT hanging from my neck (I'd been getting neck pains with the standard strap) and secondly I found it easy to use that way while walking around.

Are there any good straps that will ease the neck pain on a larger/heavier system (if I were to carry around the neck), and what other alternatives are there out there? My local camera shop mentioned these straps but they didnt have any left in stock to show me. Are they strong enough for the D800 and 28-300 combination? (They seem rather cheap to be carrying an expensive/heavy combination)

Many thanks in advance for all advice/guidance

T :)

I use a blackrapid shoulder strap, but I also have a blackrapid wrist strap that's good too! :)
But I would recommend getting a bos tail to go with either of them to attach to the strap mount on the camera. :D

I just recently bought a BlackRapid sling to use with my D800. The model I bought didn't come with a tether so I bought the tether kit with it. Some models have tethers included. I have used mine twice and it made a big difference. I carried the 800 & 70-200 f/2.8 all day with no neck discomfort

I personally use the Carryspeed pro which is the most comfortable strap that I have tried compared to the more popular brands.

I have not tried the cotton carrier, which looks pretty good except during summer since it is another layer of clothing.

My other strap is made by Photoproshop pro sling camera strap (optech)

Thanks for the replies, I will look into these suggestions.

Has anyone had any dealings at all with the ones I linked to?
No direct experience with the linked-to wrist strap but OpTech typically makes decent kit. That being said, if I was going to use a wrist strap, and I do, I would suggest the Black Rapid Wrist Strap. I've carried a D7100 with battery grip and a Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 all day using one of these.

Not about the strap, but I'd be very interested in your thoughts on the 28-300mm lens. I'm thinking of getting one.
I'll let you know when I am allowed to use it :) Its part of my birthday pressy from my hubby.. this year is a "big" birthday, hense the full frame camera and lens :)

Perhaps you could share your decision making in choosing the 28-300mm? It's just that I'm right at that point of choosing the lens.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I bought a used one. The shop I was trying out the 610 and the 800 in let me try a couple of lenses on both cameras. The lens felt well balanced on the cameras (to me) and even though its not a fast lens (budget wouldnt stretch to new camera and super-dooper lens too)

I chose that one for a number of reasons... mainly because as we travel a fair amount, and I didnt want to be carrying a bag full of gadgets everywhere. My thought is that when I work out which focal length I use the most, thats where I will invest the money in the future... IF I find I need a faster bit of glass... or find that I am only using one end of the superzoom. I understand there are limitations, but hopefully I will be able to find the sweet-spot(s) of this lens and use it wisely :)

I have less than a month now before I get my hands on it, and I cant wait.

Thanks Tracey

I like that lens as it's relative short in size & seems to cover a walkaround & tele zoom all in one lens. It means that unless I find the lens too heavy, it saves me buying the 25-85mm as a walkaround.
