card capacity

Just did a test with my D600. It's got a 32GB card in slot 1 and a 16GB card in slot 2. Took both cards out and slid card 1 in and the camera reads 580 (it had a couple pics already on the card). Put card 2 in along with card 1 and nothing changed - it still reads 580. Took card 1 out and it reads 294. Take card 2 out and put it in slot 1 and it reads 294. Put the 32GB card in slot 2 and nothing changes, it still reads 294. Take out the card in slot 1 and we're back to 580.

So, it would seem that the D600 does not combine cards, and I can't find an option in the menus that allows you to change that - though that does not mean it doesn't exist somewhere.

As a footnote on the bottom of p96 of the D600 manual it says "the camera shows the number of exposures on the card with the least amount of memory."

Still doesn't seem to be borne out by you guys findings...

Page 334 gives the card capacity as well as the image sizes.
NEF lossless 12 bit = 23.4MB, No images in 8GB = 190
NEF lossless 14 bit = 29.2 MB, No images in 8GB = 147
NEF Compressed12 bit = 20.7MB, No images in 8GB = 258
NEF lCompressed 14 bit = 25.4 MB, No images in 8GB = 215

Also you have to check whether both NEX7 and D600 are set at the same bit depth (12 or 14) before comparing capacities. Further the compression algorithms differ and one may be more efficient (in terms of size) than the other and this makes the same photo vary in size.

In general I would go with 30MB file size while estimating the capacity, and cater for extra cards if required - as in case of long trips where I cannot offload the data to other devices. The cost of cards is miniscule compared to the outlay in travel, and missing the shots due to paucity of cards is criminal.

I have the camera set to the 14 bit lossless so 74 images on a 4GB card agrees with the manual. The Nex-7 writes over 150 14 nit raw files on the 4GB card. There is no option for lossless vs. compressed so I assume there must be some compression that is resulting in the number of files.
