Don't own a 5100 but is there a setting in the Custom Menus that allows you to set FPS rate? If so, perhaps it's set on 1?

I also assume you're not using the flash, right? If so, it's waiting on the flash to recycle.

There's no custom FPS on the 5100 Jake, it's just 4 FPS.

KansanShooter what do you mean by won't shoot fast, I'm assuming it's taking continuous shots but slower than 4 FPS?

1. Low light or small aperture in [A] mode causing longer shutter speed, so impossible to do 4 FPS.
2. Exposure delay mode (d4) set to on. Turn off. When turned on, the shutter is delayed to reduce camera shake so FPS will drop.
3. Refocusing between shots if the focus point changes with camera set to shoot only when focused (a1)

With flash, only 1 shot will be taken with each press on the shutter button even if the camera is in continuous mode.

I've seen a couple threads like this elsewhere (google your problem), so know that whatever is happening to you has happened to someone else. Unfortunately that person, while asking the same question in several other forums, never returned to talk about the resolution. So, if you figure it out, please let us know what the issue was. I suspect it's a setting thing. Probably Continuous Mode is not compatible with another setting you're using, Try putting the camera in Manual Mode and boosting the shutter speed to 1/500 just to see if it fires away. If it does then back up to where you were a step at a time until you figure out where it stops working.

Or pour through the manual (which I suspect you're doing).
