Can't Decide Nikon 85mmF1.4 or Nikkor 135mmF2d DC

all 3 lenses you mentioned are in my scope. 85 then 135 and if the g2 can do it better then my 70-200 vr1 then im in. I am on the lookout for the 24-70 g2 as well. but if sigmas releasing a 105 1.4 competitor then zoom are moving aside. the primes I have now are alright, but no zoom will kick it up a notch like the look a prime can give. it would be hilarious if at the end I wind up with only tamron and sigma lenses in my bag and no nikon. im already sans nikon flashes and I couldnt be happier.

this gives a sad but realistic look at the situation we have today. tamron and sigma are delivering fantastic gear. because of performance but not SOLELY because of price. years ago youd choose a sigma and realize the performance was as good as the price you payed. im shocked at what sigma and tamron are putting out. killer performance and good prices and even ridiculous vs nikon.

btw, 135 is hard to use and u need space to go back. go out and put your lens on 135 and shoot as is and see that it has its specific use but limiting. the 85 is versatile. and its not like the 135 will create a much more amazing image. the 85 can do that as well. I use it for sniping cnadids at weddings. its great for nice isolation shots on the dance floor as well. shooting "through" the crowd of people. gives a feel like your peeping in from afar.

I'm watching this unfold with interest, but not opening the wallet until I see some good results from you guys. I just picked up the 135 DC maybe 5 months ago. I was eager to do the 85 ART, until the 105/1.4 reviews started coming in.

I'm not in a hurry to upgrade the Tamron 70-200 unless the G2 just blows it away...which I doubt. I do think I could consolidate the 85/105/135 down to a single lens ... and the Sigma (and Tamron, for zooms) are definitely getting my attention.

huge difference between the nikon 105 and 85 art with price. read lensrentals reviews. huge jump in price. both are great. every review says the 85 art lens is one of/the best lens theyve tested. I think the nikon is not impressive for the price performance ratio. 85/105/135 are all top notch we know that. but when you factor almost twice the price and not any better then the sigma (although difficult to compare the two lenses) I dont see the excitement in the lens. im sure its only a matter of time for sigma to release the 105. they did a 20/24/35/50/85/135 its coming for sure. I have no doubt it will be better then the nikon. like every other lens they released is class leading.

The only reason I lean towards the 105 is for the reach. Too much time on DX bodies so now the 85 on full frame doesn't seem as long as it used to be. But I think. You're right, that 105/1.4 is a bit too much...even comparing 85/1.4s, the Sigma is better price/performance.

If I where starting out all over again,I would (for the price and quality)go for the Sigma lenses for sure. But having the Nikon lenses in hand I just can't justify selling what I have and going Sigma all the way Ha ha.I am looking at the Tamron 16-28mm F2.8 though.Just to finish what I think I need.lol

I honestly can't remember the last time I mounted a Nikon lens; nor is there anything in the Nikon catalog that interests me in the least. I still have a Nikon 85mm f/1.8G but the girlfriend latched on to that some time ago and it's far more her lens than mine, not that I miss it really. Oh, and I think I have a Nikon 20mm f/... uh... something or other floating around. I'm not sure... It's a really small lens.

My "Dynamic Trio" consists of my Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8, my Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 and my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art. Take any lens out of this equation and I would feel diminished, photographically speaking.

I totally agree with you.Gotta shoot with what you're comfortable with.I research before I buy and I don't buy just because it's new out.I want to get to know what I have and use it to its' fullest.Maybe I'm old fashioned that way but it seems to work for me.lol

I agree completely. nothing there I cant get from tamron or sigma. a pro can build a a complete lineup with their lenses and have on par or better performance/IQ for much less money.

every art prime is a much higher level then nikons. build performance price. the tamron zooms are also excellent performers.
