Alrighty!
My wife wants to pick up a Canon DSLR after watching me having so much fun with the Nikon, just to add a little variety to the mix.
So does anyone have any pros & cons of a Canon?
And if you would know, which would be a good buy?
I am thinking (if i do go ahead with this), i would like to get a DSLR & an all-in-one lens like the 18-200 for around $1000.

Why? It's double the expense. Why don't you buy yourself a D600 or D7000 and give your wife the 5100. That way you can share glass etc.

Nothing wrong with Canon, just another camera system. Though, as everyone else has pointed out, you will not be able to share lenses. Just think of it this way: if you yourself were to buy a back-up camera, would you buy a Canon DSLR? It makes no sense. Anyhow, it's your money. Happy wife, happy life!

Lol. Appreciate the responses, though I expected the direction this would go ;-)

Needless to say I've been through this discussion.. I do plan to get a fx camera sometime, maybe the d600...

The intention is mainly to have a camera and one lens like the 18-135 or 18-200 and not buy any extra glass for it...

She's tried my nikon and her brother uses a Canon.. She likes the feel of the Canon better...

I have not decided anything though.... The ideal scenario for me would be to get the d7000 :)

I'm with the above posts too - if you get another brand (Canon), then you won't be able to share your glass with your wife (and isn't marriage all about sharing!! :p)

However, there is the flip side to this argument too.
You both have a Nikon body, and at the same time, want the same lens to use... ahhh marital bliss out the window and let the encore begin :p

If you do however go for a Canon system, then at today's prices, the Canon 550D (body) + EF-S 18-200mm lens will set you back £828 (which is nearer the $1250 mark).
What might be an alternative option is the 550D/600D with a 18-135mm lens (£729/£629(!)) - and in that case it'd make more sense to go with the 600D.

My views on a Canon system - I personally think Canon bodies are more 'user friendly', slightly better build/designed, and a little more 'female savvy' (no offence to the ladies out there, but what I mean is they seem to fit better into a smaller hand like ladies have).
However, I'm not a fan of Canon lenses too much - don't get me wrong, they have amazing glass like Nikon do, but something about a Canon lens that doesn't make it as appealing (maybe it's the dull appearance compared to Nikon's 'gold' aesthetics).

You may have seen this already, however, it does fit your (wife's) budget:

Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR Camera Kit with Canon EF-S EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens & EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens

999.00 including shipping, may have to pay tax...

Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR Camera w/18-135 IS + 55-250 IS -BUNDLE #5169B005 5169B005 L1

This is at Adorama, as the URL states. I am sure there are other places that may be cheaper....or not. My son has this camera, and it does a great job. You could probably contact Adorama, and get the kit cheaper, without the 55-250, who knows? Email is free, so far.

As you probably know, the T3i (600D) is compared to the D5100 in many articles concerning Nikon vs Canon. Depending who writes said article determines which camera is the best. Of course.

I will politely not mention what I would think of my wife wanting a Canon.

I am at year 48 in personal wife-relationship training, and understand your situation....probably....

May the Gods smile kindly upon your decision....LOL

I have used both of the Rebels ti and 2ti I think they are called and a 7D before. Good cameras and the 7D is an amazing camera. Canon's strength is very strong zoom lenses some say way better than Nikkors. I think when you said the Canon just "feels" better in her hands is an extremely important point.

My father was a Nikon user, hence I became a Nikon user, no regrets there.

a lot of my photographer friends are Canon based, so, I get to try their cameras out. Personally, I don't like the way the Canons feel in my hands, the controls and such, but then 35 years of using Nikons will condition one's reflexes.

one feature that shocked me was no dedicated Bracketing button, such a useful feature.

in the end, all the SLRs brands are fine,

If I was going to add a brand to my mix, it would be Sigma, would love to have the Foveon
sensor SLR to compare.

Yes, this is what I did. I convinced my wife I wanted to upgrade my camera (D7000). So to seal the deal (and get her approval ... she is the Boss after all) I told her I would pass my D7000 down to her son .... only on the condition that he pass his D3100 down to his sister. Her son is an architect and was sooooo happy to be handed a D7000 for free. And her daughter just had a point & shoot Sony at the time so she was also thrilled.

Me ..... I got a new-in-the-box D800E .... (I'm working on my lens collection now.)

Everybody's happy!

Talk about happy endings :)
Lucky you..

Well from the research i've done, i think if i convince her to try a Nikon, it would be the D7000.
If that feels right and strikes the right cords, i am set.

Else i think amongst all the Canons in my price range, the Canon EOS 60D would be my choice.
Coupled with a canon 18-55 & tamron 70-300..

The D7000 is an awesome machine .... I truly do miss it.

I guess if I were you I'd base things on how many lens I have for the Nikon .... after all ..... if you go Canon too you'll need to invest in additional lens (I'm sure) ....

I took a look at the D600 this past weekend at my local Costco ..... Very nice indeed .....

It's tough having to make these decisions huh?

Enjoy.

Nice a 800e! I have been tempted to sell my D700 and buy the D800e,

No, keep the 700 as your back up ......

Get the 800 .... too

If I didn't give up the 7000 to my step son I would have kept it ....

I'll get a back up at some point ....
