I have a few close-up filters some from my 35mm film days and a set I just bought. I thought I would try them out on a candle or two

Very nicely done... curious what lens you used for these???
Thanks,

I was curious too and peaked in the exif - Nikkor 28-80mm f3.3-5.6g AF lens. I'd never heard of it before. Nice, sharp little lens that seems to be rather inexpensive on eBay ($50-60).
If you look online Ken Rockwell highly praised it in a review.
Thank you both.....
RockyNH - I used the NIKON AF NIKKOR 28-80mm 1:3.3-5.6 G which cost me £25 off ebay, superb lens
Yeah I don't think close-up filters are very trendy, people prefer the 'proper' macro lenses which of course would be much better but for the price these are a good alternative
Thanks! Do you know which brand you bought?? I was looking at US site and the filters are quite inexpensive. I cannot (nor do I know what one) afforde a dedicated macro now, or at least not justify it but I may grab a set of filters to play around with on the cheap.

Thank you, that brand is not availble in my EBAY but that is the same type of set I was looking at..
Thank you! I have no dillusions of macros rivaling a good macro lens but it will be fun to play and see what I can capture and if I like doing it before a larger investment...

Pat, I have one very old set that is unbranded, but another set I bought a few years back on ebay that say "Sonia" on them. They are decent, but now that I have a real macro I'd probably feel less great about them if I did a side by side test.
Yeah go for it, its a laugh and costs little. The filters can also be screwed together to increase the magnification. One point to make is that with all the filters screwed on (especially the +10) it can make the lens at the front heavy and sometimes hard for auto focusing especially if looking down at your subject. You may need to be on the level or manually focus. But with the smaller magnification filters this isn't really a problem

John, thanks and thanks for all the useful info... I will likely pick one and do it... It will be fun and good to learn setup etc.. Then if I really enjoy and want to get more serious, I can consider investing in a real lens.
