I have a few close-up filters some from my 35mm film days and a set I just bought. I thought I would try them out on a candle or two

Very nice. I like them both. I've never played with close-up filters before. Images are nice and sharp, and it looks like it compresses your DoF - at least based on what I would expect looking at the exif data.

Thank you.. the filters for the second photo were from Years ago and the first photo I just bought them off ebay for a huge price of £1.85... BUT I think that was a price error as they now say £11.85 but still good for that price

Nice shots. There is never much talk about macro filters. Extension tubes always get recommended as the 'cheap' (not really) choice for getting into macro, but for $12-$15, the filters are great.

Thank you both.....

RockyNH - I used the NIKON AF NIKKOR 28-80mm 1:3.3-5.6 G which cost me £25 off ebay, superb lens

Yeah I don't think close-up filters are very trendy, people prefer the 'proper' macro lenses which of course would be much better but for the price these are a good alternative

Very nicely done... curious what lens you used for these???

Thanks,

I was curious too and peaked in the exif - Nikkor 28-80mm f3.3-5.6g AF lens. I'd never heard of it before. Nice, sharp little lens that seems to be rather inexpensive on eBay ($50-60).

Yeah it is a great lens, I will post some photos of it later.

If you look online Ken Rockwell highly praised it in a review.

shhhhh,, that is one of the few bargain lens left on ebay,, I have one,, and it is the perfect light weight, high quality nikkor lens, compare the build of this to the newer generation consumer lens and you will be impressed. Not a silent focus, but fast, and plenty sharp. I consider this one of the last of true bargain zooms on ebay or elsewhere.

Thanks! Do you know which brand you bought?? I was looking at US site and the filters are quite inexpensive. I cannot (nor do I know what one) afforde a dedicated macro now, or at least not justify it but I may grab a set of filters to play around with on the cheap.

Well one set of filters I have had for about 20 years but I did just buy THESE off ebay, they took a little time to arrive (few weeks) but they were VERY cheap. When I bought them I only paid £1.85 but now I see from the link they are £11.85 so that seems like I got them at a miss-price. But even for £11 (or US equivalent) they are worth it. A very cheap way of playing with macro but of course they wont be on par with a 'proper' macro lens.

What about THESE but they are for 52mm lens, you can of course get a step-ring to change the size to your lens. I had to do that and that was only £2

Thank you, that brand is not availble in my EBAY but that is the same type of set I was looking at..

Thank you! I have no dillusions of macros rivaling a good macro lens but it will be fun to play and see what I can capture and if I like doing it before a larger investment...

Yeah go for it, its a laugh and costs little. The filters can also be screwed together to increase the magnification. One point to make is that with all the filters screwed on (especially the +10) it can make the lens at the front heavy and sometimes hard for auto focusing especially if looking down at your subject. You may need to be on the level or manually focus. But with the smaller magnification filters this isn't really a problem

Pat, I have one very old set that is unbranded, but another set I bought a few years back on ebay that say "Sonia" on them. They are decent, but now that I have a real macro I'd probably feel less great about them if I did a side by side test.

I would certainly hope the macro filters would not be a patch on a real macro lens. But then again the price is a little different to :D

John, thanks and thanks for all the useful info... I will likely pick one and do it... It will be fun and good to learn setup etc.. Then if I really enjoy and want to get more serious, I can consider investing in a real lens.
