Definitely a lousy image - was only testing this lens due to issues with the AF. This was a new bird that I've never seen, and it gave off a chirp that was completely unrecognizable to anything I've ever heard. Any idea what it is?

And what are the lines on the right side? Eye lashes? Whiskers?

To small for my old eyes. I was thinking mockingbird but the colors around the neck are wrong,

EDIT: Was able to enlarge it, definitely not a mockingbird.

Really hard to tell with the view. Guessing Yellow-bellied Flycatcher or more likely Eastern Wood Pewee (we had one yesterday).

Eastern kingbird is all black and white, Yellow-bellied it's not wood pewee it's not. This bird has a grey head yellow breast and a red tail. I'm going to throw it out locally as well. Thanks so far.

I use https://www.whatbird.com/ a lot for id'ing birds. There are a lot of knowable folks there.

When I was mowing near a bush, this little bird flew from the ground up to the fence. Later on it was back on the ground. Size-wise it is bigger than a sparrow but smaller than a robin. I'm guessing possibly a fledgling female cowbird?

The first image isn't great by any means but was the best showing the speckled chest.

Just a follow up to my last post asking about the fledgling cowbird. This morning before I let my dogs out, I looked through the window to see if it was in the yard. It was just a few feet from the door being fed by a pair of Red-Winged Blackbirds. They all few off when they saw me.

Is this a Red-tailed Hawk? It does have a red tail. I saw two perching on the light poles in my neighborhood at twilight this evening. Sorry, kind of a crap image.

Yes, it's the Western variant of the red-tail. Darker plumage than we have in the east. You can see enough of the tail to know for sure.

Never seen them in my neighborhood before. Saw some variegated plumage, and in the low light, wasn't sure what I was looking at. I got an image of him flying, so I could see the tail really well. Two landed on the same light pole with a huge full moon above. It was cool looking.

Thanks for sharing this. As Jake mentioned, your version is darker than ours out here on the east coast. Juvies don't have red tails (at least ours here) which can make IDing them from behind even more difficult. It's interesting to see how species differ in various locations. :encouragement:

@hark The Red-Tail was out there again this evening. I hope he will be out there on Sunday, so I can try to get an image in decent light. It is a new bird for me. Added him to my Cali bird list.. One of the things I like about this forum is the information available regarding wildlife. I learn new things all the time.
