There are a number of us here on the forum including me that use the Dolica tripods and are quite happy with them.

this is the one I shoot and I really like it because it is tall enough for me to use without having to bend over to use it

Amazon.com: Dolica AX730P105 73-Inch Proline Tripod and Pan Head: Electronics

It also has a Max Load of 17.6 Lbs so it will handle just about anything you put on it.

You are not broke as you got what you love :) Also your selection of lenses is good. You should also get the bag for your camera and lenses.
As for your wife, let her buy something that she loves and she won't be mad at you. :D

Do you have the Nikon DX 35m 1.8 ?
heard that is a good prime lens and for $185 that is a steal
Are there any Colorado photo clubs in this forum?
think it is good to have the info from folks that have been there done that.
going to try the update firmware again
have already failed 3 times

If you buy a cheap tripod you will only regret it later then buy a less cheap one 6 months later and regret that then maybe buy a good one a year after that and have spent 150%+ the cost of the good one to start with! :)

Try and buy the best one you can stretch your budget to... That pretty much means things like a Gitzo (get a '3' series, not a 1 or 2), a Manfotto, or 1 or 2 others. Majority of tripods (especially light ones) are flimsy, contribute jitter, and not very good. Anything with bracing between the legs is a sure sign its substandard...

Don't get anything that relies on a centre pole/extension (if you can) as these are generally useless anyway, making your camera unstable, difficult to keep level, etc...

Just my 2c worth! :)
