yes i tried a different 4 GB card, formatted it. it formatted it fine, saves images to card like normal. but still wont turn off. tried that bulb thing also.
now have put it back in rice after putting it in cloth in attempt to dry it :) (if that's the reason)
Some Nikon dslr have a factory reset option, i think D3000 and D40 etc....but i cant find one for this :(

Ok so I have a new 610 about a week old now, brand new USA model not a refurbished. I have unfortunately only had a few small Windows of time to play with it. Last night I noticed that when I turn the camera off it takes about 4-6 seconds for the top display to change to its off state. All of my other Nikon cameras turn off instantly. I also noticed that if I cycle the camera on and off a few times it will get faster and faster to turn off. So far all functions seem to be normal. This may be totally normal, just throwing that out there.

Hmmm that's weird ..... There may be a software bug.
Mine doesn't turn off even after an hour. Will check again after 48 hours in hopes that it will reset itself.

Yes I left the battery out for 24+ hours, didn't work. Now planning to leave it out for 48+ hours and see. If it doesn't work will send in for repair.

ok so I left the camera in rice for 5 days without battery, didn't help.
then before sending to Nikon, I put in the battery when the switch was in 'on' position. then after putting in battery turned the switch to bulb and then turned to off....and it turned off : ))))
Thank you Mike d90 for your suggestion. I tried that before, didn't work. I guess for this model, the way (may be) is to put the battery when the switch is already in 'on' position then to turn to bulb then off. the camera was without battery over night before that (in case it makes any difference). so it was not the moisture or taking pics in snow, it 'likely' hanged when turned off while the camera was saving to card.

I am genuinely so happy it worked!! I know that sickening feeling of a camera you think may be broken. I hate for anyone to feel that feeling. Congrats!!
