Calumet Declares Bankruptcy

They had a location convenient for me dropping off camera bodies for a sensor cleaning on occasion but their in-store prices would make your eye's pop clean out yo'head, cartoon-style, if you had any concept of buying anywhere else.

So, no... I'm not the least bit surprised at the sudden closure of their stores, or, frankly, the d'bag fashion in which they're handling this with their staff, for that matter.

To be fair to Calumet, I'm not sure they could have done anything differently in terms of notifying employees, and I bet if you look back, there were clear indications that the company was in this much trouble. You don't just declare bankruptcy unless it is a last resort. They would have had to try other things to save the company first and when those things failed, they were left with bankruptcy.

Back home we have two local camera stores just a few blocks from each other. They both been in business since the late 60,s and show no sign of going out of business.

We've got a few too. Both are chains too so I doubt they'll be going anywhere.

Which is a shame. I like spending time going to a store and browsing around.

Yep, I try to buy at my local store whenever possible. They are very open to questions and have well experienced opinions. Nothing like being able to physically touch gear and try it out before making the investment.

As a displaced Chicagoan, it pains me to see one of the older local companies going under. I just bought my Tamron 24-70/2.8 through them in Philly and had it shipped. Glad it wasn't a few weeks later as I would have been out of luck.

I always visit the South Philly store, whenever I go home. They don't have any stores in the Midwest. I even have a Calumet camera bag, that I bought a few years ago. They were a good store. It's too bad. I hate to see this happen.

We had a Penn Camera chain here that filed for bankruptcy and closed, only to be purchased by Calumet, leaving some stores open, but none convenient to me. Ritz, the other chain here, also closed. So now we have none. Online it is then. I tried to buy our D7000 from Penn before they filed for bankruptcy, but they were out of stock so we got it online. We did buy our flash there though.
