Calculating for Future Purchases

OK now for the filter debate (you knew it would come eventually). Not really the debate you're thinking as it is not to use or not to use, but more on which filter to use. On the telephoto (200-500mm) out of the UV or clear glass (NC) which would you use? It sort of falls in between the B&W and Hoya for any kind of quality in 95mm filters.

Opinions please, but not to use or not to use any for protection. :D

I originally figured I would go clear as that is what I have on my other lenses all of the time, if not a CP-L, however the clear in 95mm is about $25 more than the UV and not many quality choices for clear in 95mm. Hoya doesn't even list one for clear, only UV. I found a Nikon and B&W clear so far. Of course B&W is less expensive, but still over $100.

Adorama has a 200-500 bundle that includes filters, but 3 filters for a list price of $60 and on sale for $20, I don't figure they will be much in the way of quality. Ha! I would get the bundle anyway, because it is the same price as the lens by itself.

Still shopping, but getting closer to making the purchase. I just have to get some of these incidental lose ends figured out. Ha!

Hoya just happens to make the HD series, which I like very much, but I would use a B+W filter in a heartbeat. They're excellent.

I haven't found a Hoya listed in 95mm. All I have is Hoya for my other lenses except for the ICE ND filter. I was looking for a Hoya because that is what I prefer (I think) but if I can't find one, it will probably be B&W.

Well the journey has begun. I have the 200-500mm lens and a B&W 95mm Multicoated Clear filter on order. I also found a used (Excellent condition) TC14E II that I also ordered on the recommendation of @BackdoorHippie.

Now the waiting game begins. :unconscious:

Got word today that the 200-500 lens and filter should be here Tuesday via UPS, which means it will be at the end of the day. Also got word that the TC14E II will be here, also via UPS on Wednesday. UPS is always an end of the day thing, like 5-6 pm.

Don't be surprised when you open up your package. The box for the 200-500mm lens it's huge.

And the software they added as a bonus, and the filters, lens cap lanyard, lens cleaning kit........

It might take a semi to deliver it. Ha!!

I was fortunate. I bought my D500, D750, 200-500mm f5.6, and 70-200mm f4 VR, all at local stores, so I got my toys without the wait. I haven't had this much fun in years. The 200-500mm and 70-200 are fantastic lenses, and the D500 and D750 give me a lot of options.

I bought the Manfrotto Gimbal head, and it works well with both a ProMaster carbon fiber tripod, and a Manfrotto 055 Pro. I'm looking at the Wimberly, but longingly. I may wait a while for that one. Right now, I'm busy learning the ropes with the new gear.

Sounds great Dennis! As far a brick and mortar stores close to me, I only know of one and it is about 150 miles and pretty small.

Now I have been put back in my place, peon status. Ha!
