Buy Lightroom?

Money's tight for us here in Red Creek NY. Is now a good time to buy LR? If they come out with a new version within the year, are owners of the current version entitled to updates? Another question - how big is LR as I seem to have limited space on my hard drive. One more-anyone recommend a good place to buy the Home version. Thank You, Paul

Don't know on the right time to buy.

LR has a little under a 1GB install file. It installs to a little over 1GB and the catalog and backup files will grow as you use it. Min are at 3GB and I really don't take or process a lot of photos.

I have the standalone version and get every update until the new version is released. Then I either have to pay for an upgrade or continue using the old version. They'll probably release a new one before summer but don't bet money on it.

I've always considered LR a great program and it probably still is if you're starting with post but once you check out others, it becomes obvious where LR can't compete. But it's a great all-round program and worth the money if that's what you need or like.

Will I upgrade? No.

If money is tight, check out the free ones first. There are quite some and one of them might fulfill your needs without having to spend money.

Do you have a student or teacher in your life? If so, get the teacher/student edition. Or set up a camelcamelcamel.com account (thank you @hark for the tip) and wait to be notified for a good price drop on Amazon. It happens, brief and steep.

Lightroom is expensive when it is first purchased, but once you own it, Adobe has offered upgrades for a lesser cost...somewhere around $75-79.

For those who aren't aware of how camelcamelcamel.com works, here it is tracking the price of Lightroom 5. You can enter in your desired price, and if Amazon lowers the cost below the price you have entered, you will receive a notification.

Consider Corel's Aftershot - sometimes on sale, got my copy for $39

Interesting video review comparison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX7ek7xJYJ0

As for space Aftershot alone is 87mb on my hard drive, the HDR section is stored separately adds 150mb more. To get this I just right clicked on my hard drive folder and read the properties. This is used for a large photograph collection so if it stores thumbs there would be a lot (60,000+ photo's last count).

I like it. Used to use Elements - ran into some issues and switched to Corel, have not looked back.

Just checked the Corel site, $59 today, comes with bonus software. https://store.aftershotpro.com/1184/purl-ATG_PID_Redirect_ASP2?hptrack=casoasp
You can try it for free first.

Fortkentdad,
Wow Corel looks pretty good. One of the reasons I was leaning towards LR instead of Photocopy is the ease of use. This program certainly looks more user friendly than LR. I will consider it and let you know. ( it will be a while). Paul

Corel offers both a 32 bit and 64 bit version, you get both when you buy the program.
Upside of 32 bit there are more plug ins that are available in 32 than in 64. As for speed difference - hard to say - no idea. Both function identically.

Two other options....try the Creative Cloud, which for $9.99, gives you Photoshop AND Lightroom (the most up to date versions and it's per month), and I haven't personally tried it, but heard a program named GIMP is awesome (I think it's free). Try either or, and save some money.

Fortkentdad- things are getting complicated. Just checked out the list of supported camera's and the 3300 is not on it. Paul

I was hoping someone would tell me I can still use Corel's. I was thinking about ordering it before the sale ran out. Paul

Try calling Corel or posting question on their FB page.

I suspect that the support specific for the 3300 would be a minor tweak over any one of the other 3000 series or for that matter most Nikons. But call first.

Or better yet, its free to download - you get the full program, try it for a week or three and then buy (hope sales stays on) and you will know for sure how it works with your system and with your camera.

Sale prices seem to come and go periodically.

I also use Corel's Paintshop Pro which I find better than elements and far far less expensive than Adobe.
