lol. Well, I am out of ideas. But from what I have been just researching on the D7100, it does in fact have relatively small frame buffer. I don't know if the size is equal or smaller than my 7000. If it is the same, you are creating larger files than me which would explain the lower buffer. Most people have stated that they were only getting about a 7 shots in the buffer. So I don't think there is a whole lot more that can be done at this point.

Have you tried a factory reset?

No, I'm a little nervous about doing that having got the camera set up the way I like it and maybe not getting back to that state. Also, doing it item by item is teaching me a great deal about the camera. We do seem to be getting some progress.

I am inclined to agree. To thank you guys for your help I will be having a beer for each of you which pretty much precludes any further logical thought.

I think it's possible to 'save' the way the camera is set up to the memory card. You can then recall those settings and put the camera back to the way you had it.

I'll investigate that further and see how it's done. It would certainly make me feel more comfortable with a factory reset. Thank you.

Read up on the procedure and saved the setup to "U1" on the dial then did a final check of the buffer. It now reads r7 so I guess the reset isn't necessary.......Yet!

I have never payed any attention to mine since I rarely use that feature. I shoot 1 at the time most of the time. The only time I put is on fast is when I am doing bracketing and then it is just 5 shots. I sis look and mine is sitting a r6. I have NR and all that stuff turned off since I had much rather that care of it in post for myself.
