BOYCOTT Best Buy

So my previous thread was how I found the greatest deal by purchasing the D5100 w/ a 18-200 VrII for $650. Well the camera body came with a defect, the battery gets stuck inside the camera. Contacted best buy and they are completely out of D5100's so they cannot help me. My other option is returning the camera and getting something else, the catch is, since the camera body was listed for 59.99 in the deal and the lens for 599.99, I'd be responsible for the difference. So basically even if they had the D5100 in stock, if I just returned camera and not lens, I'd have to pay for a new camera body minus the $59.99 even though its the same item????? What a joke Best Buy is. Now I have to take my brand new camera to get repaired!!! Very unhappy....

mmmm,, I got one of those too, I say register the Warranty (I am mailing my tomorrow), and then file a warranty repair, is it perfect, no, but with patience hopefully you can get it sorted,,, So, far, mine is ok

I doupt that Best Buy was pleased with this deal, I still think it is an error on their part.

This isn't how every other store would do it? Returns must be made according to what they were sold for on the receipt.

Buyers were lucky they shipped out any of the deal at all. Most often, the deal just gets canceled and on you go with life.

If it's like the 7000, there is a lever that unlocks the battery. Is there one in the 5100 as well?

yes, similar design, I am always so gentle taking out the batteries, I almost like the old open flap, out popped the battery, I remembered my D300 battery lock was like fort knox, but Nikon cheaponed it for the D700 and people complained,, so they added the little lever to keep it from falling out when you open the flap. I wonder if a local repair shop can sort it out for like 20 dollars. Personally, I always try my local shop first, so far, they have fixed every thing that I have brought in (including the shattered screen on back).

Sounds like Best Buy are trying to get out of any kind of replacement option, because they sold it so cheap. Strangely, just had a look on the website and plenty of non-standard kits on sale and in stock, so they do have bodies in stock somewhere.

I'd take it into a store and demand a replacement if they can't help you out online.

Thanks for the feedback. Ends up the spring to pop battery out was not functioning. I'm over my hysterics!!! lol I dropped it off at the "geek squad" and they'll fix it under my warranty. @sandpatch- I would do that but I love the camera and the lens I have and would want the same ones so if I were to return and goto a different store I'd be looking at about $600 more then what I paid..... Just annoying to have a brand new camera out to be fixed.

Yes,, I'll be honest, in the 40 years of buying gear,,, this was the best NEW gear deal I have EVER EVER gotten. Thank you to the original Nikonite poster that pointed out this amazing deal!

The Geeks can make all things new again, even your D5100. :)

Best Buy and Amazon have good reputations about taking things back if they're not right, so I tend to stick with them. Sadly, all of the local camera stores have closed in my area. One deservedly closed because of terrible service, but I miss the other.

Years ago, the BB by us used to push subscriptions to things at the checkout. One month on my credit card statement was 3 subscriptions to AOL. That took 3 months to clear up. A year after that it was a bunch of magazine subscriptions, both times traced back to BB. People were being signed up when they signed the credit draft. BB also had a policy of pushing staff to do this back then. I only shop there as a last resort and will only pay cash.

Opinions of a store can change by the day, or by the deal.

I had an unfavorable opinion of Best Buy until I got in on two deals. The first was a clearance Touchpad. But it was the second deal that made a huge change in what I think of them.

They had a Logitech Harmony remote on sale for $49.99 from $149.99. I bought mine at $149.99, figuring I would get them to honor the price afterward. They initially refused to, but eventually decided to meet me halfway at around $107 after taxes. Not what I wanted, but better than the original price. A week later they honored the original price by refunding me $100. So I got a $150 remote for $7.

Now, that still doesn't make up for them selling stuff for huge markups that I can find elsewhere, but by them doing me a solid and then some, I'll shop there for anything that's around the same price as I can find elsewhere.

It's easy to get enraged over something we feel entitled to, but we often don't do the opposite when it's warranted.

I bought my 3100 at BestBuy here. Would not focus properly and after thinking it was me for 2 months and then figuring out it was the camera after all I carried it back. Past their 30 in house replacement so they sent it off for repair. Came back worse than before. Different problems this time. Took photos with it and carried it back to BestBuy. They took one look and went to the shelf and picked up a new one and handed it to me. Said I should not have to deal with this anymore.
I think the local store's management has a lot to do with how customers get treated. I have returned a number of things there and have always been treated better than I though I would.

I haven't really had any problems with BB. I don't use them often but when I have it's after research and price checking. For instance, as a non-student, I was able to get my Macbook Pro 15" Retina with a few other bits and pieces for the same price it would have cost through the Apple Store's Educational Store. I went for $100 off on AppleCare from Adorama though. :)

But when I purchased my new D5100 I checked BB and it wasn't really a deal. I ended up getting mine through Amazon (with the kit lens) for $50 less that BB. Actually I got it Amazon for $50 less than the current price on Amazon so I was happy.

I guess they're like any other big chain, sometimes you get lucky, most times it's pretty standard and, sadly, sometimes the bear gets you. :)

Aloha.
