BIF camera settings?

Don knows a lot more about this then I do, so if @Don Kuykendall advises you on something different, then I would go with his suggestions over mine. I am still learning this as well.

Actually I would advise him to actually try both ways and see what works best for him. We are all different and shoot different ways. What works for me might not work for him. That is what I like about this forum is that we all have different ways of doing things and they all might work. Try both ways and then fine tune it to what works for you. ;)

Did not know you had the D7100. If shows D5300 in your profile. This makes a big difference. The setting about auto shutter speed under the auto ISO is set on my camera all the time. It is fantastic.

Sorry to confuse Don. I put the D7100 in my signature but haven't yet worked out how to add it to my profile DUH!

How many bars do you have it set over the middle bar?

I ended up for everyday shooting to set it in the middle. That gives me the reciprocity rule based on the effective focal length. Which for me works out pretty good. For BIF I use M and set my shutter speed for stop action. Focal length has no effect on what I am after.

I see. I'm mostly at 300mm unless a fire breathing dragon flies by, then I may hit 70mm.;)

One of the favorite local places I shoot BIF the birds come in close so I end up all over the place with the zoom.

I'm going to have to dedicate an afternoon of studying this BBF method. Everyone raves about it, but I just can't get my head around it.
I tried it once a long time ago and it just didn't feel natural to me. Maybe I was doing it wrong.

I would have a hard time shooting without the BBF. Even when I shoot manual I have a tendency to push that button.

There's little one can do wrong: push or don't push. ;) Once you're used to it, there's no going back.

The issue to overcome when shooting BBF is to directly hit the release and fire away. Once you can control that urge, and wait on the focus lock indication (if the cam shows that), there's little need for focus priority.

Sorry but IMO you have over simplified the answer and i never said you shouldnt use it i only explained the situation with it,at my age most of my urges have to be controlled.:D

Btw, the D7200 is the first cam I had that showed AEL (or AFL - I have to check) in the viewfinder when focus locks. Is this the first cam giving that indication or is it an option that can be enabled in others?

At first it feels quite different and we tend to switch back.Give it a couple of tries till you get it correct. Then you'll just love it.

I had to take a couple of weeks of shooting almost every day to get used to shooting with BBF. When I pick up my wife's camera it drives me crazy since I can not convince her to switch to BFF
