Could you tell me a bit more about the "cheap 2x" teleconverter...Several weeks ago I had dug out my 45 year old Reflex NIKKOR C 500mm f/8 lens and disassembled it. I cleaned the mirrors and lenses with lint-free lens wipes to try to remove a film I could kind of see, and it seemed to make the photos soft and fuzzy. I did not test right away, and I did not think to try to test until today. I finally have sunshine to go in the back yard and chase the birdies. First I used the lens by itself (Nikon Zf + FTZ) then I added a cheap 2x teleconverter in between for 1000mm reach.
Last 2 were with teleconverter.
When the third of my 3 brothers died early in 2022 he had some Nikon film gear. His darkroom stuff was all ruined in a basement flood. Cameras were kept safe but had issues. He had a non-descript off-brand 2x F-mount teleconverter. No autofocus or CPU pins. Kind of limited use to me.Could you tell me a bit more about the "cheap 2x" teleconverter...

I did repair one of the 2 film bodies (N70) and used it for a project last year. I sold off 2 of his old lenses, only kept a 50mm f/2 manual focus and a 35-70mm AF.
Tough question to answer. You will only really know if somebody reports trying, or you go for it and try yourself.Sorry to hear about your brother..
When I look at the Nikon teleconverter it does offer a list of the lenses it is compatible with. I was just wondering if, for instance, the Viltrox or other brands, could be used with other Nikon lenses, or it is an actual physical limitation due to the design of the teleconverter...
I'm just trying to find out, if I would be able to use the Viltrox X2 teleconverter with my Z 28-400 lens. Like you said, unless someone has already tried the combo, it would be hard to know... Viltrox does mention only 3 lenses: 70-200, 100-400 and the 400... It could be a physical restriction, but it also could be a web page that has not been updated lately...Tough question to answer. Long ago I did have a Tamron 1.4x converter that had AF screw coupling and CPU pins. It worked without issue on a pair of D80 camera bodies, then failed with an error code displayed after upgrading to a D7000. It was among items I traded in to buy a D750. I never seriously shopped for another one.
