BF Hammer 2026: Me and my Zf

First to share from the new camera. It has been gray and ugly outside interrupted by a blizzard 2 days ago. So let's just start with B&W mode on the Zf and turn on the firmware 3.0 simulated film grain. JPEG right from card, resized smaller, and watermark pasted on.

Testing out some wildlife setup in the backyard. Only a lonely robin would come play with me. I did not use pre-release capture but was set for high-speed continuous exposures (15 exposures per second).

Several weeks ago I had dug out my 45 year old Reflex NIKKOR C 500mm f/8 lens and disassembled it. I cleaned the mirrors and lenses with lint-free lens wipes to try to remove a film I could kind of see, and it seemed to make the photos soft and fuzzy. I did not test right away, and I did not think to try to test until today. I finally have sunshine to go in the back yard and chase the birdies. First I used the lens by itself (Nikon Zf + FTZ) then I added a cheap 2x teleconverter in between for 1000mm reach.

Could you tell me a bit more about the "cheap 2x" teleconverter...

When the third of my 3 brothers died early in 2022 he had some Nikon film gear. His darkroom stuff was all ruined in a basement flood. Cameras were kept safe but had issues. He had a non-descript off-brand 2x F-mount teleconverter. No autofocus or CPU pins. Kind of limited use to me.

I did repair one of the 2 film bodies (N70) and used it for a project last year. I sold off 2 of his old lenses, only kept a 50mm f/2 manual focus and a 35-70mm AF.

Sorry to hear about your brother..
When I look at the Nikon teleconverter it does offer a list of the lenses it is compatible with. I was just wondering if, for instance, the Viltrox or other brands, could be used with other Nikon lenses, or it is an actual physical limitation due to the design of the teleconverter...

Tough question to answer. You will only really know if somebody reports trying, or you go for it and try yourself.

Long ago I did have a Tamron 1.4x converter that had AF screw coupling and CPU pins. It worked without issue on a pair of D80 camera bodies, then failed with an error code displayed after upgrading to a D7000. It was among items I traded in to buy a D750. I never seriously shopped for another one.

I'm just trying to find out, if I would be able to use the Viltrox X2 teleconverter with my Z 28-400 lens. Like you said, unless someone has already tried the combo, it would be hard to know... Viltrox does mention only 3 lenses: 70-200, 100-400 and the 400... It could be a physical restriction, but it also could be a web page that has not been updated lately...

If you look at the Nikon Z 1.4 converter, the lens element extends far above the mount. On many lenses this results in the converter lens element contacting the rear element of the lens you are trying to mount. If you look at this picture of the Viltrox converter, it has the same design. I would be very surprised if the Viltrox converter would work with lenses that are not compatible with the Nikon converter.

I thought about this and I was wondering if:

Camera + Viltrox 2.0x Teleconverter + Viltrox Extension Tube 24mm + Nikon Z 28-400 lens, could/would work?? I know it would fit, but would it work??

It looks like you may have the same issue, as the extension tubes have a rectangular mask that may interfere with the element of the converter. It's possible there is clearance, but I wouldn't count on it. Even if it did have clearance, you would likely have to be VERY careful when mounting the tube to avoid damaging the converter. Even if this worked, I doubt you would be happy with the results. The 28-400 has an aperture of F/8 at 400mm. You would lose 2 stops with the 2x converter and end up with F/16 as maximum aperture. I seriously doubt that your autofocus would operate at F/16. The other issue is a 2x converter will degrade the image quality of a lens that is already suffering from a high zoom ratio design to begin with.
