I honestly don't think you could go wrong with any of those cameras mentioned blackknife. They are all excellent quality cameras. Buy which ever camera meets your needs as well as budget. You can upgrade the body in a few years if you choose to do so and you will also be able to use the lenses you have acquired. You can purchase a new d5100 at a great price from Amazon with the 18-55 kit lens currently 646.95 which is a fantastic price.

or the d7000 Body only is running right at 996.00 with the recent price drop, with a kit lens around 1296.00, I highly recommend the d7000 as I love mine.
d300 is still priced at 2199.00 new on Amazon but they have many used available starting at 450.00 on up as well. I bet with low shutter acutations you would be looking at 600 to 800.00 for a nice one.
If you opt to buy used please purchase from a reputable seller. I haven't purchased used items from Amazon. I know they have a bunch of independent sellers and feedback varies with each one. I prefer to purchase directly from Amazon and not deal with the individual sellers unless they happen to be a major retailer like Adorama or BH Photo that is listing on Amazon of course. If you choose to purchase a used camera perhaps you may do so locally at a camera shop where some type of warranty is given.

The best dslr is the one that's in your budget and your comfortable with. I use the D7000 and I think it's a wonderful camera. I can't offer any opinion on any other Nikon model as this one is my first. I knew the second I received it in the mail it was the one for me, plus the price was right. Goodluck

I have a D700, D7000, & a D 70s, in their own ways they are all wonderful cameras. The D7000 is great I love the U1 & U2 feature, as well as the dual SD card slots. great senor low noise. Its a great camera at any price. You can't go wrong with the D 7000.

So I'm new on here. I wanting to buy my first slr camera. My husband doesn't want me get an entry level camera but something that I can grow with. We need a camera that isn't too expensive. Any suggestions?

If money were no limit I would buy a D4, then next step down a D700, then if I couldn't stretch to that I would stick with the D90. It's a semi professional camera rather than entry level, It will teach you all you need to know and even if you never upgrade you can buy the best lens and turn out even better shots.

That being said, now I have my D700 I don't see me ever upgrading again. I will now invest in awesome lens, since the camera has the processor to deal with them.
