A good example of a long lens on a 5300 getting good results is @wev. He has a Tamzooka paired with a D5300 and gets fantastic results. Of course I don't know if this is typical, but it is one of the good results. I have the 70-300 on my D5300 and it usually does ok. Sometimes I wish it would do better, but it probably is more my fault than the set up. Ha!
