Best lens for D40 camera

Which is the best and the most advanced lens that will suit my D40 Nikon camera. I have very little ideas about lenses hence would know if i can buy a 55mm lens for my camera or not?

This depends on your application. Take a look at the 55-200mm if you want a cheap zoom, or the 35mm prime if you want a good portrait lens.

I would also add the 18-55mm lens to those suggested. Also, the VR lenses are the way to go now if you want less or no camera shake. Adds a few bucks to the cost, but well worth it in my opinion.
