I will be shooting a Native American sunrise ceremony tomorrow morning on Alcatraz Island. That means up at 3am, swill down some java and hit the road to be at the ferry by 4:30.

I am wavering about slinging the 5100, 600, tripod and a bag, or the 5100, 600, tripod and a lot of pockets, or just using the 600 and tripod. I’ll be using a Tamron 28-300 f3.5, Nikon 18-55 f3.5-5.6 kit and Nikon 55-200 f4-5.6 with Bower flash.

I believe in traveling light but with so many photo ops on this I am tempted to maximize the chance. I want low light shots of the SF skyline and waterfront before the action starts, and during the beginnings of the ceremony. As you can imagine the island is bathed in merc lamps, so I plan to alternate with flash and no flash and play with the WB. I’ll be shooting dancing figures in firelight and near darkness until just before sunrise.

And the forecast is for rain. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
