Maybe they are going for the paper-doll effect.
That is what it looks like to me.

I looked up the photographer. He has some interesting images, and has taken photos of celebrities. Has had art shows, etc.
I think the magazine decided to do this. If so, I wonder what they were thinking?

They're after the Instagram generation. Take the girl in the dress out of context so you can put it in yours. Completely deliberate and when taken in context across multiple ads it's actually quite effective. Remember, this is marketing not photography.
