Automatic sensor cleaning

Ok, i guess I'll just dig into the menu and find it. Yea, I'm loving it so far. Did some shooting yesterday and I'll probably post some shots later today.

Hmmm not sure if anything is happening. I found it in the menu. had the 2 dashed lines showing to the right. I think this means it's set to off. cycled through to clean at on/off and pressed ok. got out of menu. shut of camera. Turned camera back on. didn't feel anything happen. I thought I read that it vibrates a little when cleaning. Went back into the menu and the 2 dashed lines were displaying to the right of the menu item as if it was still set to off. tried it again same result. Am I doing something wrong or is it really working.

I chose clean now, and a second or two later it said "finished". Not much time to vibrate and I felt none, but I wasn't holding the camera either.

It says in the manual the "most effective" cleaning operation should be done with the camera sitting on a flat solid surface.

Hi, Yea I did try the clean now option also and I didn't feel anything happen but I was holding it and it wasn't flat so. I'll try it again with it on a flat surface like you did. Maybe it is working properly and I just don't know it. Thank you for your input.

You have to go into the rest of the menu. When you see a menu choice click on the Right arrow around the OK button. That will carry you into a submenu and you will see two choices. Go to the second one and make sure it is set to clean on startup and shutdown.

Many of the menu choices have sub-menus so be sure to check all of them. Lots of goodies hidden away.

Hi Don, I did go into the submenu and pushed the right arrow and scrolled to clean on shutdown/startup then hit ok. then left the menu. But when I come back to that menu item it still shows the 2 dashed line as if nothing was chosen.

That is the way it is supposed to be. At least that is the way my D5100 does it. I think that is just a place holder to show you that there is a sub-menu.

By the way, I don't think you can actually feel the piezoelectric vibrations from the sensor cleaning, at least I never have. By the way Mark, a good tip I learned on Nikonites is to (a) hold the camera body with the lens mount facing down while you change lenses so as to lessen the chance of dust falling in the body and (b) to keep the camera in your bag so that the lens is not pointing up, so as to again deter dust from falling on the sensor. Worthwhile and simple tips I thought.

I have never been able to feel the cleaning process on any of my either. Mine is always set to clean at on and off.
