I played around a lot with it yesterday & it seems it autofocuses sometimes, usually when a subject is close up. I've got to grips with manually focusing it for now anyway and had a go with the kit lens which autofocus works fine with.... So i just dont think I am/was using the 50mm properly but I'll get there.

Thanks for all your help!

I am going to suggest you consider sending the lens back. If you have the kit lens and it works fine, I am suspecting it may be a lens issue. If you bought it local (as opposed to mail order) stop in and show them/try another lens.

Well, the 50mm 1.8 d does not have it's own focus motor. So the problem could be the drive from the camera or it could be the lens. I'm not sure what kit lens Jess is using, but it most likely has its own focus motor and is not testing the camera's internal motor. In post #5, Jess thought maybe the kit lens also was not focusing. That is when I had hopes it was the af-L button. But anyway, if the kit lens with its own motor works, and the 50mm 1.8d does not, it could be the camera or the lens and probably not the AF-L lock button setup.

Jess, you say when it does not focus, that you can twist the lens and focus manually. When you do this, is the AF/M lever on the camera still on 'AF'? The focus ring on that particular lens should not turn freely if the camera is set to AF. Flipping the lever to M should disengage the camera internal drive and allow the focus ring to turn freely. Other lenses allow you to manually override by twisting the lens, but that one should not. So see if your 50 1.8d behaves that way... Camera on M, lens focus ring turns freely. Camera on AF, lens focus ring locks up. Don't force it if it does lock up. If the focus ring turns freely in both AF and M, something is broke. Again, just speaking of the 50mm 1.8d for this behavior.
