Auto focus setting question Red/Green (Newbie)

Hi,
I was left a D3300 with lens etc. I also found a lens in the box which has AF and VR on it.
When i tried the second lens, it fits and turns on ok, but when i focus, the square turns green and immediately red? and i can't take any photos?

any advice would be greatly appreciated

The lenses you want to use on your D3300 will be marked AF-S indicating the have a built in focus motor.

If it has a focus switch make sure its in the M/A position.
