The Director of Education and Engagement for Audubon Pennsylvania has contacted me for permission to use some of my photos of the Endangered Night Herons. They will be using them in their work with schools in and around York, where this rookery is located. She found me from some photos I posted on Flickr. I am going to go there again this weekend to see what other shots I can get. No cash but will credit me as photographer for them. Fine with me, I do this because it's enjoyable, and if it helps in school programs and makes kids aware all the better. Beside I can always say I was published by Audubon.

I would tread lightly.

Yes, this is a non-profit organization, but that doesn't mean they're broke. Audubon frequently runs photo contests and issues some hefty prizes, in addition to having the standard clause:

and to grant the Contest Entities the rights to the Submission herein granted, including but not limited to the worldwide copyright license, upon the terms and conditions set forth herein; (c) no rights in the Submission have been previously granted to any person, firm, corporation or other entity or otherwise exercised or made use of or encumbered in any way; (d) no part of the Submission has been published in Sponsor’s Audubon Magazine publication or any portion of Sponsor’s Audubon Magazine website (www.audubonmagazine.org); and (e) his/her Submission does not defame or invade publicity rights or the privacy of any person, living or deceased, or otherwise infringe upon any third party’s copyright, trademark or any other personal or property rights.

Just make sure that you're not giving away your photo forever. If they send you something to sign, be sure to read it carefully.
