Well, I agree with Backdoor Hippie and Dave - I think a lot took selfies at that event, which was a happy celebration of this great man and not what we know as a funeral (which is happening this weekend).

Its actually more respectful to be happy and celebrate, when this is the way its done in this contry, imo.

Sorry, I don't believe that. Why else would you have a look like that in the first place?

Don't make the mistake of interpreting a fraction of a second taken completely out of context with anything that resembles reality. Not only that but a funeral for a 95 yr old man is not a sad event but rather a celebration of a man's life. Mandela led a life less ordinary than most human beings and what people will long remember is his warm and gracious smile. That was his gift to the world and the fact that people were smiling and enjoying themselves while celebrating his long life would be the best tribute to this man and his gracious smile.

this wasn't a funeral; it was a celebration. I don't have a problem with the selfie. The First Lady looks peaved but no way of knowing if she really was (as the switch in seats may suggest) or had something else on her mind. (yeah, right) Typical rag mag shot you find in the supermarkets.

I don't believe that. I think she was PO'd or the photographer got a nice visit from some men in black.

So I'm guessing that every group photo you've ever seen or taken has everyone looking perfectly happy, so much so that it's never been necessary to take a second shot because Sue looks like she's been drinking or Uncle Bubba has his eyes closed or Grandma is shooting Billy the evil eye? Have you ever paused a TV show only to see some grotesque face looking at you from the screen? Have you ever cringed at a Driver's License photo that you swore you were smiling for?

Of all people photographers should understand that the look on a person's face in a photo may not convey any sense of reality, but hey, if you're predisposed to wanting to believe something about someone who am I to judge?

The selfie may be funny (or embarrassing, depending upon your POV) but I think the guy who is signing nonsense is infinitely more interesting. I mean, what's up with that?!?

"to pay last respects to probably the last real leader & hero of our times"
Well, I am not sure about it - the other day, I read the review which tried to prove that N. Mandela is a "Gandhi of our time". Funny - I don't remember Gandhi being a terrorist, throwing bombs and killing people...

This is an excerpt from his jail sentence:
"
The documents revealed ample evidence that Mandela was the chief conspirator. The accused faced charges of sabotage, including deeds of sabotage, committing of illegal deeds, canvassing persons for training in warfare, manufacture and use of explosives with the aim to commit violence and cause destruction (altogether 153 acts of violence were listed) and conspiracy to engage in guerrilla-warfare with the aid of foreign armies. Plans included the manufacture of 48 000 land mines and large quantities of hand grenades, pipe, petrol and bottle bombs"
