ARTICLE: Darktable versus Lightroom

Digital Photography School recently published a very concise but information review comparing the free Darktable to the commercial Lightroom. Very informative and well illustrated examples.

Thanks! I'm looking at software now and this was quite relevant. I like free. It appears to do a good job. From what I gather it's more complicated than Lightroom and not quite as "good" with good being relevant I suppose.

I'm looking for the least amount of complication possible so I'm still leaning Lightroom.

I have used Darktable on both Linux and OS X. There is no Windows version. It works well, but does have a learning curve to it, as does most photo software. If you are running OS X, I think it is a good alternative to Lightroom, especially if you do not like Adobe's new subscription practice (please, no spears and arrows from those who have no issue with the subscription model for software). Darktable has a lot of features, more than what the article discusses. It is definitely worth a look if you are running OS X. If you are running Linux, it is a very viable option. I like it a lot better than RawTherapee, which I found rather clunky and slow.

FYI, just to clarify, while LR is available in the CC subscription, it is still a supported, standalone piece of software, unlike Photoshop.

Thanks for clarifying that. I did not know that Adobe still made it available as a standalone program.

Thanks for this. I have not heard of Darktable before I will give it a spin.
