9to5mac is reporting that development and updates to Aperture and iPhoto will cease. They will both be replaced by Photos for OS X.

The statement: "With the introduction of the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library, enabling you to safely store all of your photos in iCloud and access them from anywhere, there will be no new development of Aperture. When Photos for OS X ships next year, users will be able to migrate their existing Aperture libraries to Photos for OS X."

Well thats good news, but they may be a little late. I suppose that will mean a new purchase seeing how they are replacing both with a new app.

One interesting point in the article is that "Apple is working with Adobe to offer a upgrade path to Lightroom."

Great. Right after I buy Aperture.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. If Aperture is going away, or at least not supported on newer versions of OSX and therefore possibly not available as I refresh hardware, I should stop putting effort into learning Aperture and just get on the LightRoom bandwagon for real now.

Re: Aperture is dead

I always like Aperture and am heavily invested in the Apple Ecosystem , but this news makes me glad I stayed with Adobe all these years.

I use Aperture exclusively and am outraged that Apple seems to be dumping us. I hope all Apple owners will let them know of our displeasure. I certainly will. If I have to start over in Lightroom it will put my editing development back by years.

I doubt it's going to be that bad for you. We can help you along the way.

Didn't apple do this with some other program a while back, when they left the pro users in the dust for a more consumer friendly program? I forgot what that was, but lots of people were upset about that as well.

I am going to wait and see. There may be no reason to switch to the new system. And I may not opt into the Yosemite software either. The only problem I can see on the horizon is that new camera models that come out May not have Aperture support. I am willing to cross that bridge when and,if, I ever reach it. I am not willing to pay a monthly fee for an editor and am convinced those monthly fees will go up every year as soon as Adobe locks enough people into their system.
