Anyone here live in the New Orleans area?

The wife and I are going to be in New Orleans for a few days soon and was hoping there was someone here that is from the area that could point us to the best places to visit, photograph and eat. I see all the tourist areas but I know locals really know better.

I worked down there for a few years but left in 1980. Probably everything we did isn't there anymore. A couple of my favorites were the Riverboat tours (There was one that went into the bayou areas that I liked). Also See if the fairgrounds still have the horse racing. That was always fun. Also check with your hotel. There's Always something going on in New Orleans and surrounding areas.

I have checked out all the tours and have found a couple that I will not miss. The cemetery tour is high on my list along with the riverboat tour. I was there a number of years ago but I was working the entire time and did not get a chance to see or do anything. I really want to find the things that are not on the tourist lists, things the locals enjoy doing/seeing/eating.

I had a boss many years ago that would visit a couple times a year and ride with me to visit my photo labs. He would have me stop at a local hardware store or where ever he thought local people might be congregating. He would then ask where they liked to eat. If they gave the name of a chain restaurant he would tell them no and then ask "If you were going to carry your wife out tonight for a casual meal where would you go?" They would then tell us some hole in the wall place. They were generally some of the best food you could get. I have been doing this for 20 years now and have had some very unique meals in some unique places. Most of the time the food and service is outstanding. On a few occasions we have walked in and turned around and walked out but that does not happen to often.
