Short answer to your question is... I dunno. The real question is, is it worth it to you to find out? Because that's the only way to know for sure. I don't even log on to eBay. I just don't bother.

If I can't afford to buy from someplace like Adorama, B&H or Amazon... I can't afford it.

With a rating like his I would never buy that item. To get that many negative feedbacks is not exactly easy unless you're not an up and up type person.

Some time ago I saw a 'tube vid from a photographer that bought a totally convincing Nikon grip fake - can't remember if it was ebay or not. The item had all the packaging, complete documentation including instructional item folded exactly like Nikon + he paid full retail price thinking he was getting a true Nikon product. He did the 'tube vid as a warning to others.

Edit - here's the link:

I was tricked once buying a flash drive on ebay - thought I was getting and paid top dollar for a really fast Corsair 4gb drive and only got a 2gb drive. Truth is I actually bought a Corsair drive, but the memory chip was 2gb not 4gb. The fake mills over in mainland China had managed to reprogram the flash drive interface to appear as a 4gb drive to the computer. I got my money back and unforunately for the vendor, who was legit, lost his pants and his previously good reputation - he was tricked too.

Saying all that, I've successfully bought lots of stuff on eBay but just not anything. I need a grip for my d7100 and have looked on ebay but won't buy one there.

I like ebay . . . have sold and bought lots of stuff with really no bad experiences. But I stick to several rules when I'm buying:

1. Their seller feedback rating has to be 100% . . . ebay has a good system in place for keeping that rating up there. You have to really screw up to have your rating dropped.

2. I don;t buy from "stores", especially the overseas ones (Hong Kong, China) . . . many of them are middlemen pushing knock-offs and you would really be better off with adorama or BH. I buy from private people.

3. I always ask questions to test their response . . . if they don't respond to questions, they may not be legit.

+1

Those are good rules for buying on ebay.

The one in the link you posted seems VERY similar to what i got.. which was fake..
i would stay away from that..
for battery grips & anything that directly related to your camera, it's always good to get stuff from B&H or Adorama for folks in the US.
If not, it has to be a Nikon authorized reseller.
Learned it the hard way!

LOL

Looks like I posted the same vid you posted - I should read the threads a little better. :)

Thanks for the advice - I've looked at the other less expensive grips, and they temp me because I'm sort of cheap. But I've decided to pay the extra money for a Nikon MB-D15.

My polar bear paws are clumsily, and after spending $340 to repair my camera I would really hate myself if I damaged my camera again due to buying a cheaper unit. The other grips obviously work well for people, but in my case it's best to use a belt and suspenders. :)

That's pretty much the routine I follow with eBay shopping, a 100% positive feedback rating being my comfort level. For photography gear I generally use Adorama, B&H, etc. (through eBay) simply because they offer the extra year of warranty. With other goods I use eBay/the net for as much of my shopping as possible as I don't care where it comes from. Price and service are my primary concerns and with eBay offering buyer protection that's all I need.

I admit I buy a lot of stuff off of eBay myself. Nearly all my camera stuff except the camera itself was bought off of eBay. But if I were paying for high end stuff, I would tend to mostly buy from some reputable place I could be more sure of.
That's just my two cents. Lol :D
