Sure, see the link that @Needa posted above. Pretty much covers it... Nikon batteries, and any other OEM's batteries are not unique in any way. There is a plethora of battery makers that make 3rd. party batteries for every battery powered device ever made.

My sister got a 3rd party battery about a year ago and said it was no better than her 10 year old Nikon battery.

I have used many different types of batteries over the years (when I was a Canon user) and I often found the 3rd party batteries performed just as well as the Canon ones.
