Alternatives for adjusting RAW photos.

I cannot find a way to duplicate the problem in NX-D either. I strongly prefer to use Adobe, but NX-D seems to do what it does OK, in its way. I find no way to mess up the histogram in that way.

I wondered if there were any additional software involved, between NX-D and getting a copy to here?

I love NX-D

It could be a bit more user friendly I battled a learning curve.

The only extensive tutorials on YouTube are not in English

This little snippets helped some but is not awesome.....I am always looking for more...

I have never had anything other than crisp results no clue what is going on with your installation. I wonder if you have other photo software on your computer, it does interact with other photo software in mysterious ways.....I use Picasa and NX-D together in a bit of a odd workflow but I get what I need.....I have yet to master view NX-i remains a work in process for me.

An internet tutorial is hopefully imminent.....

Right guys n gals, I had deleted NX-D and have just downloaded it from the Nikon official site. I have just taken some test shots of my sister and pet dog Millie and so far everything seems in order.

It was a colour RAW photo which I converted to B&W, cropped it and made darker with the Gamma graph thingy. :)

So it was a bad download/install... Well, that happens. Glad to see you're back on track!

Glad to see you got your problem solved. I am coming in late to this party, but I can say that I use View NX-I for transferring from camera to computer. Then Capture NX-D for RAW processing. All works well with the exception of the not to often crash of NX-D (my old computer resources are pushed to the limits, I think). RawTherapee is nice, but has a VERY long learning curve and in most cases not needed because NX-D does what I need. I use it at times, but not often. GIMP is my go to program for adding "stuff" to the NX-D's jpg outputs.

YW!!
glad to hear it was the download!

if you discover any new NX-d tricks please bump this thread!

Processing NX-D has now become pretty routine for me. It's not written in stone as some pictures need to be tweaked more or less in some areas. (Not B&W processing, however)
First set WB...usually Direct Sun, but sometimes cloudy or shade just to see the effects.
Next Usually set to Vivid or Landscape
Next set Sharpening to 6 or 7
Contrast +1
Saturation +1
Crop if needed
Then play with the RBG curve
Sometimes the Master lighting curve
Unsharp mask +10 or 15
Then play with shadows and Exposure compensation as needed.
Go back a tweak
Save 100% quality .jpg

I have used NX-D right from the time I bought my D3300 in Mar, 2014, and I have never faced this problem. Must have been a bad install or a corrupted download. In past I have been downloading and installing all new versions. Some times there are quirky bugs so I go back one version. The latest NX-D does not suit me as they have again changed behavious of some functions. So I will wait till the next release or one after that.

In my caese NX-D is the only RAW processing software I use, and barring local image edits it is all that I need.

I have saved the most used settings in default.nxd file under "Save Adjustments"
- Vivid
- Sharpening - 7
- Contrast - 0
- Saturation - 1
- NR - off

When I scan old photographs with the camera I add
- Red Colour Balance, as the images have discoloured a bit
- Contrast - 30

Similarly I have a few other settings for specialized work. Just select the images and load the relevant setting from "Load Adjustments"
