Thanks for all the kind words @ Krs_2007 @ Vixen @ SteveH @ wthorson I shoot with the P510 which is a fixed lens mirrorless. These Herons are neat and this is one of only 4 of their Rookery's in PA. The National Audubon Society has labeled it the 82 Important Area in the US. There are over 100 Herons there. It's seems like there is one in every tree. It is also one of only two Great Egret colonies in the state. If you look at this pic you will see three Herons in a top to bottom row on the left and 4 nesting Egrets. And that's only two trees.

Not the best shot but they were far away. Another eagle (not sure of the type) came around and Dad was going to have nothing to do with it. He chased him until they were out of sight and returned about 5 minutes later. Fun to watch nature in action.

A nesting pair of Egrets. Hard to see the nest through the tree. I love the green around their eyes during breeding season.

Must be great being able to watch these chicks growing. :D

It is amazing to watch them. It is also interesting to watch the parents. Yesterday while one was feeding the other was on a tree nearby watching. When the chicks were done eating the second one flew over to the nest and the one feeding took off. It was as if they had planned it. They never leave the chicks unattended.

Went back to check out the Herons this afternoon. Watched this guy pulling at twigs on a tree until one broke off. Waited about 10 minutes for him to head back to the nest. Gotta call it the best shot of the day. Will probably post more later tonight after I go through them all.

Excellent Shot Alan... I also liked the Egret pictures too!

This is the lake we were at today. It is in downtown York PA, which seems to be a crazy place for all these birds to gather. The large pines on the right are where the Egrets nest while the Herons nest in all of the trees along that side of the lake. The biggest problem, other that seeing through the trees, is watching for the "White Stuff" falling from the trees while you are there.

Great shots of the Night Herons and Egrets Alan.

Thanks for the kind remarks Marilynne. It kinda like shooting fish in a barrel. They don't seem to be afraid and just sit there and watch you. The hardest part is finding a good spot to shoot between the tree limbs. The Egrets on the other hand are so high and the trees they are in are so thick it becomes difficult to get shots.

I am hoping nest month that I might get some shots of the young but not sure that will happen. Just have to wait and see.
