Africa - Tripod or not

Well I am still debating to take a tripod to Africa, and tonight I have thought about it and it brings me to my time in Thailand where I never had it and managed with out. These are the photos I took with out a tripod...

I've been to several places in Europe that had me wishing I had a tripod, even if I did have something to put the camera on.

If anything, I would look into compact monopods.

I can't seem to travel without my tripod. I have a CF Gitzo and I am use to it now. It's all up to you on how much gear you want to bring with you.

I have thought about that also and I agree that it may be handy. The only issue I see is that in the safari vehicles we will be limited with space, so I am thinking that for most of my shots I can handhold with good technique. As it is my bag limits will be stretched with my camera gear. I understand a monopod weighs next to nothing but I am just not sure of the practicality of it... I have a week to decide :)

you seem to hate tripods,, ok,, while,, I just picked up the promaster 423W Carbon, for only 99 dollars (list 240),, not as high end as others but more compact, and lightweight, slides onto the bac of my backpack. I hike with the tripod attached to the back of my pack, hardly even notice it.

Yes the hat trick works.

laughs,, you stress more than anyone I know on which equipment to bring.

8 days to go? awesome, I am going to Brazil and Chile within a year, so,, my Africa trip will have to hold off.

If you can manage it, take one. Trying to remember the brand my brother has, but it extends to 6 feet while folding up to about 16", with the head. Might have been Benro or Silk. Worth having something like this in your pack on an adventure like this.

My trip is different to a photography safari as its an overland safari. So instead of being in open vehicles like that we will be in a 4wd bus type set up most of the time, we also will have more than a few people in a safari vehicle so space may be limited. I have done a lot of research so far and I keep going back and forth regarding to tripod or not...

I would be taking "Something"! Better to have and not need than to miss a shot that you can never replace! Monopod or as Jake suggested, a little more travel oriented t-pod..

If you bring your tripod chances are you'll probably never need it but if you don't bring your tripod, Murphy's law dictates that you'll need it and will be sorry you didn't bring it. (Is it "Murphy's" law down under or is it "Sod's" law?)
