If I was to upgrade from the d3300 would the 5300 be a better option over the 7100 because its newer model, wifi, expeed 4 or the 7100's 3, better construction? Its amazing how many reviews you can read and still not come to a conclusion. So Im asking if anyone out there owns a few of these models and can give an opinion on what is really worth it? I like portrait photography mainly btw.

thank you

Well I have D7100 that I've shot for some time. My girlfriend has and shoots with a D5300 so I've been able to examine shots from each on identical shoots and just generally handle both of these camera bodies a lot. The main differences, IMO, are the ergonomics (the D7100 feels much larger in the hand than the D5300), the external controls (the D7100 has more knobs and buttons) and a few options the D7100 has, like AF Fine Tuning, which I wouldn't want to give up.

If you want to talk about pure image quality, the D5330 absolutely holds it own against the D7100. The D7100 has a bit wider dynamic range, which is nice to have, but with good glass either camera will produce amazing photos (assuming you do your part).

If you have any specific questions I'll do my best to answer them.

I have a D5300 and like it. The sensor is the same as the D7100. The 7100 has a few features that I don't need while the D5300 has the moveable rear screen which I use a lot. You can only do video using the rear screen so being able to move the screen is a help. I use the built-in GPS and the built-in WiFi so have the 2 battery grip as the camera will use up one battery fairly quickly. My hands are large also so the grip helps that a lot.
Money was tight and I wanted the 18-140 lens so went with the 5300 at the time.
Not a recommendation - just information................

My pennies.

I have the 5300, and I am considering the 7200.

Reason are for the lenses. The 7100 or 7200 has a built in motor. I can save a far amount of money getting the D versions of lenses instead of the AF-S.

For example the 85mm 1.8D is a fair amount cheaper than the 85mm 1.8G. Same for the 50mm and more...

The saving in buying the older lenses can make up the price difference.

If you're in it for the long haul (portrait business?), the weather sealing, AF fine tune, dual SD slots and ease of control on the D7100 can't be beat. The FISH said it well, though. Either camera is gonna give you amazing photos when used properly.

Additionally, for me, the weight/size of the D7100 just fits my hand better.
