Along the lines of 'saving' in LR, be aware of 'Snapshots' in the left hand pane. At any point during your editing, you can take a snapshot so you can always go back to that point. Good for trying different things. This doesn't create a hard file, it just remembers particular points in your edit history. If you need a file, just select a snapshot and export it.
