Thanks, Jack. There is a Dog Wood tree in front of the box and when it leafs out photos may be difficult. Have to wait and see. Screech Owls are small as far as owls go. Exactly how big do they get, I don't know. I'll do some research on it.

Well I do need to warn you how NOISY these owls are. Oh goodness we have one in our area and the little shit keeps us up at night ALOT! Those suckers are loud loud loud! Good luck with trying to get photo. You may find your self resisting the urge to shoot it with something other than your camera :D

I don't think we will get any takers on the box. We now have three Great Horned Owls in the neighborhood. One of them roosting not more than 25 yards from where we put the box. A great Horned is a vicious predator of other birds so most of them keep their distance... a long distance. Great Horned Owls average 18 to 25 inches in length and can have a wing span of up to five feet. That's for the females. The males aren't quite that big. A Great Horned nesting box is a lot bigger than the one I put up.

When the subject gets to food, I usually ask 2 questions.

Question 1... Have you ever eaten horsemeat? The usual answer is emphatically NO! Of course not!

Question 2... How do you know?

I have learned that there is very little that I have not eaten. As a consequence I have a very broad palate.

Owl tastes more like an adult quail. The bigger the bird, the longer you have to slow cook it. Wrapped in parchment paper and packed in wet mud.

You toss it in the fire and wait until the mud has completely dried. The bird is freaking delicious!

Try it sometime.

Pete, somehow I actually believe you have done that. As for myself I do not believe reducing the Owl population even by one serves any real purpose unless I were lost in the woods and starving.
