a couple questions on software

if anybody here is a D5100 owner and has used the selective color retouch option you'll know that you have the option to select up to 3 colors that you don't want included in the conversion to greyscale. pretty easy and it seems all colors close to the selected ones also get excluded. does anybody know if this algorithm/method is used in the same way in any of the popular editing programs like Lightroom, Photoshop, Gimp, etc. the only tutorials i could find for Gimp only allow you to select a single color and you have to use layers and brushes which is kind of limiting not to mention time consuming. i was thinking there might be some kind of masking function that takes up to 3 colors and excludes those during the conversion to greyscale. seems like there would be.

also, i just downloaded Lightroom 5 (demo) to see what it does but it doesn't seem to do much. of course i could be missing a few menu items/functions but in any case would you say that one would need maybe 2 or 3 different software programs to do everything they want or is one program usually just fine? ie: what do you own and what do you use it for?

If I'm understanding you correctly you're asking if LR will selectively alter a color pr a specific area in your image? If so, then yes. I will.

As for software, I believe in the holy Trinity of software. That being LR, PS and Nik collection. I've yet to discover something that I cannot do with one of these 3 programs.

Slipperman, unless I'm wrong (which would be the case most of the time), The colors that you select (up to 3) are the ones you DO want....I have a D5200 and that's the way I understand it. This photo, I just selected one color (Red) and this is what turned out.

maybe should have worded it differently but i said 'don't want included in the conversion to greyscale'. in other words, it won't convert the selected colors to B&W. and yes i've used it already and i think it does a great job. i'd just like to be able to do it outside the camera which is why i asked if any software does it the same way..

so what do you use LR for mostly?

I only have the cheap software right now ( ViewNX 2 and Picasa) In Picasa there is B/W Select feature but it is like a paint brush that you can adjust the diameter. A little tedious but works if you have patience. Here's one.DSC_0374.jpg
