800 or 800E

Not to sidetrack the thread, but. . . I've seen you comment about how much you like the 70-200/f4. I'm seriously considering it. I realize that the f/2.8 is faster, but us there any other reason why you are looking at the 70-200/2.8?

For a little bit more the new version of the Tamron 70-200/f2.8 is also a consideration. . .

Shot most of Musikfest with the 70-200mm f/4 and realized that there are times I could use the stop. Like the D800 it's not a matter of need as much as it is one of the few things that make sense were I to trade. A 300mm f/2.8 is in there too, but would require me to fork over $$ and I'm not looking to do that just now.

Well, this makes me think and also makes me wonder if I should or shouldn't get it... If you don't see a difference between the 600 and 800 shots, then I probably won't... And I've already had written and thought that I did NOT need the extra definition and file size... Ah man, why is it so tempting then.. If only I was poor and didn't have the money the question wouldn't even be asked. :)

I have looked in the past into the D800 / D800E. Sometimes the urge comes back as future machine, but it does not seem for me at the end.
1) I do believe that the D800(E) is an upgrade from a D600, in control and functionality, e.g. AF system
2) Extra definition goes for D800E but it seems to be only for freaks on definition, since you are not into it it would be more D800 it seems for you. I was more thinking about every hair on insects in macro and would think about D800E.
3) Extra definition on D800(E) also will make you look at better lenses and will require a lot of attention to technique. It is a game changer, the sensor is capable of getting the best out of the lenses, which was uncommon before. More definition also requires better technique to get the maximum out of the machine.

Look at the shots you like to take and only afterwards what the D800(E) would add to that to see if it would help you. Obviously other possibilities might change the way you look at photography, that is something to consider as well.

I see the differences with my D600 and D800e both in quality and in handling, I guess I am so used to the button layout and ease of use of the D800E that I have to think using the D600. I always go for the D800e when I am out shooting.

I think that waiting for D810 prices to drop is the way to go. 810 offers a few significant upgrades over the 800E.

I can definitely understand both differences here given the added sharpness of the 800e. The OLPF does have an effect that's immediately noticeable once it's gone.

Well, as night brings wisdom, I've decided NOT to get that D800 nor the D800E.

I guess my desires were bigger than my needs and I will wait to see what Nikon comes with in the fall.

Thanks to all who contributed to shed light before I spent all this money. I guess the money saved could pay for a trip somewhere to do more pictures... :)

A very wise decision.

I should add, having a f/2.8 means that I could likely get away with a 1.7TC as well, and maybe even the 2X.

Avoid the 300mm f/2.8, it's a life-changing lens and once you get used to such optics it's hard (or impossible) to turn back.

I looked, and even the used prices are scary. It's really the lens I need, if that's possible, but I'm avoiding the cost at the moment. I would actually get more use out of the zoom. I'm saving the 300mm for when I move somewhere where it's "necessary".

$5k is a lot of money but like you said, even used prices are high which means you're not buying the lens but rather just renting it and when you go to sell it you'll get all but a couple hundred back. When you look at it like that, it's not really all that expensive after all. Not only that but it truly is a life changing lens. Coupled with a TC (I've the 1.7 II currently and have the 1.4 III on order set to ship on Aug 28th) you've got all the reach you'll ever need. Zoom would be nice but having two bodies available makes the zoom less an issue.

The only lens left on my wish list is the 200mm f2 vr plus the associated TCs. I don't have a use or need for it at the moment but if I see a good used priced lens, I will snag one and possibly start down sizing my lenses down to six or so.
