Scott it may be worth holding off until the Tamron comes out,400mm could be very nice as its nowhere near the end of its range and if tamron have done it right 550mm could be better than a 400 zoom and tc.I have no plans for a lens change but will give it some thought if the Tamron works well.

All lenses have their compromises. Too short, too heavy, not fast enough, too costly, too long. Yep too long. See how good your ultra expensive 500mm prime responds when your taking that lovely still bird shot and the thing takes off and heads towards at pace. Your going to miss a lot of BIF with that rig. If I'm at a BIF show at a nature park, the TC comes off and even then I'm often scrambling to shorten the focal length down to 100mm the bird can fill the frame so fast. I've missed a number of shots because that is still too long.
