70mm - 200mm F2.8 Sigma, Tamron or Nikkor?

Doesn't seem to be a major issue since that article says most telephoto lenses seem to suffer from it, with that in mind, the VRII is hailed as one of the best lenses money can buy....

True, but the VRII trumps the rest with this issue. I don't have a link handy, but there have been tests made with it that show pretty severe focus breathing. For what I would use a 2.8 for, the focus breathing issue totally rules out the VRII when compared to the other options.

In which situations does it focus breathe the most? I plan on using this lens for Motorsport photography (fast action with continuous focus)... I also plan to use it for portraits... Do you think the VRI would be better suited?

One situation: Close Focusing. If you are focusing at 10 feet or closer there's heavy breathing...Read the section on Handling from Thom Hogan's review of the VRII.

This review is completely opposite to all the other reviews I have seen. Whole thing is giving me a headache. Anyone know of a cheap 200mm f2.8 Nikkor with fast AF?

What I consider cheap might be expensive for some. ;)

The current production 200mm from Nikon is a f2 and not f2.8. It's a great lens to have if you can pull the trigger.

So what do you guys recommend for Motorsport (fast action) photography ? Tamron, sigma, nikon VR1, or nikon VR2?

I think you know the answer...The Nikon VRII if money allows. If not, any of the others.

Ye but the nikon VR1 is quite old now, and the VR2 has the focus breathing issues.... I'm wondering if the sigma or tamron, being more modern than the VR1, might have some advantages....

We keep telling you Nikon VRII and you keep insisting on Tamron or Sigma.

Why do you ask?

Further up in the thread others said the VR2 suffers focus breathing and that a VR1 is better suited to a D5100....

You said yourself that focus breathing won't be an issue for what you shoot. As for the VRI being better suited to the 5100...yes it's better suited to a DX camera but not better suited than the VRII. It means it's better on DX than on FX because of the corners. The VRII is the better lens on any camera.

Ordered the Nikon 70-200 2.8 today. Everything I have read says/shows graphically that the Nikon is better at f2.8 at both ends of the zoom range. Considering I am planning on going to endurance races eventually, the performance at f2.8 makes it worth it.

VRII. First outing will be the Jefferson 500 at Summit Point Raceway in mid May. Once the lens gets here next week it's going to be a very very long three weeks till the race weekend.
