5 Reasons Why Zoom Is Better Than Prime!

Each is better than the other in specific circumstances; either performance wise or convenience wise. It used to be accepted that primes were optically superior to zooms, but I don't believe that to be the case any longer.

It was accepted back in the day simply because it was the truth. And to a much lesser degree, the same is still true today.

Although zooms today are much better than they used to be, primes still out-perform zooms in terms of IQ, although the gap isn't what it used to be.

I think if your just walking around without any idea of what your wanting to shoot, a zoom can be a good choice since it give you the flexibility. But I think for planned shots I prefer a prime if I have one that will suit the shot I planned.
But that is just my opinion at this time!lol who knows what my opinion will be later after my abilities improve, I upgrade my camera and maybe lens or two, and then new affordable lenses could come out that might change my opinion! Lol :D

As mentioned by many before, it will depend on what you plan to shoot and your shooting style (habit). I have only one zoom lens which is mated to the Digilux2. All my other lenses are prime. I guess that puts me in the prime camp. My longest lens is the 105mm but I have a variety of wides. Maybe one day when I feel a need to go to say 300mm then I would consider a zoom for that. /W72

Would you say that there are some zooms that outperform some primes? I believe that this likely is the case in some comparisons between the two.

There is probably no definitive answer to your question. No doubt there will be a very good zoom and a very bad prime. But in general I would agree with that prime retains an edge over zoom. With zoom lens design, the first to let go is the speed of the lens. If you have a fast speed zoom, the glass will be humongous and the lens heavy that makes it not so easy to handle. No doubt zoom lens have its use as in OP's video - but if in terms of quality of photograph - I believe a good prime will out perform a good zoom (for the same focal length). /W72

With the Nikon AF-S 300mm F4 at over £700 and the 55-300 under £200 its no choice for lots of newcomers,if zooms can be produced at these prices how cheap could a 200 f4 or 300 f5.6 be,i still believe prime lenses to be generally sharper but so often price and convenience win, plus lack of options.
