True but DoF can be adjusted by playing with your aperture until you're at the max.

Even if the two lenses have the same max aperture, the 50 will always have shallower DOF that the 35 can't quite match. A longer FL lens will always deliver shallower DOF than a shorter lens of the same max aperture. In this case the difference will be small, but there's a difference nevertheless.

The only thing you can duplicate with the 35 by getting closer is FOV.

For the 7100 the Sigma 35mm 1.4 and the Nikon 35mm 1.8G ED score best. Next in line, ignoring Zeiss, are the 50mm.

Your original post wasn't quite that specific

I shoot with the D7100 and have decided I need a fast prime for general use. Do I go with the 35mm or the 50mm? And Why

I was replying to J-see's comments, in the interest of accuracy. Otherwise, a novice reader of this thread without an understanding of optical principles might get the impression that you can exactly duplicate the effects of longer FL by simply "zooming with your feet."

Why do people always assume novices are complete idiots and can't distinguish between "about the same shot" and "100% identical"? You should give people some credit.
