300 mm lenses

have decided I absolutely need a 300 mm lens. Am torn between a Nikon 70-300vr lens or a Nikon 300mm 4.5 Ais lens. Would welcome imput from anyone with knowledge of these two lenses.:confused:

Hi Ron,

I used to own the Nikkor 300mm f4.5, although it is good optically, it didn't get a lot of use except when shooting the moon or other stationary subjects so I sold it and kept my Nikon 300mm f4 AFS.

There is this other seller that is selling his Nikon 300mm f4 AF for $525. I would get that one since I think it is a bargain. I can send you his email address if you are interested. It also comes with a Tamron 1.4x tc.

I use a lot of ai lenses and they are great, but are all manual focus. I have the 200mm ai and it is both clear and sharp. But the 70-300mm lens can be a lot more convenient and versatile to use.
So it would depend on what your using it for. As an example, for fast shots like moving animals and such, the 70-300mm is what I'd recommend.

I have the 70-300 VR & i got it for exactly why you want to ;)

If i say i want it, i get vetoed. If I say I need it, I sometimes get away with that. Leaning toward the 70-300 vr simply because I do better with vr lens. Was looking thru binoculars today and noticing just how much tremor I was getting in the image. A little bit scary. With the 300 4.5 I think I would only ever be able to shoot it on a tripod. It is hell to get old. I just do not recommend it to anyone. it really starts to limit some of your choices.

Ron i took my old sigma out yesterday and ime with you age often needs :D VR

Believe it or not
, it will serve as a sort of macro lens in that it will pull objects closer when I can not get physically closer. I blame other Nikonites for this because I notice others seem to be doing the same thing in some of there posts. The technique seems to work.

I agree. Sometimes close enough is perfect.
