Hello. A memeber of Nikonites kindly suggested the 18-70mm as "Nikon's best kept secret", and I must say the build quality looks first class.
I can pick up a good used one here in Japan for $100. There are plenty of them for sale.
Any experience with them?
Any feedback/comment is appreciated,
Adam

In my personal experience, this is a fantastic lens. I reluctantly gave mine to my brother 5 years ago when I purchased my 17-55 and I would have a tough time getting it away from him. As long as you have a clean copy, it is a steal at that price.

Many years ago, I bought a new D70 kit. It came with this lens. It is a cracker for the price and truly is a sleeper. I took thousands of shots with it and I'm happy to say it is still in service today in the hands of my brother who uses it regularly. For a hundy, you simply cannot go wrong :)

I got the 18-70 in 2004 when I got my D70, and still use it today on my D90, it really is a cracking lens, and a metal lens mount, which is a bonus as a lot of the kit lenses today seem to have a plastic mount.

I used the 18-70 for many years as my only lens on my D70. I used it for awhile on my d7000 before moving to the 18-105. A little more reach and having VR is nice when needed on the 105. I lived fine without VR on the 18-70. Even though I'm not currently using the 18-70, I can't bring myself to sell it. It's a nice lens.

I'm with you I never use mine anymore but can't part with it. I bought it brand new and that can't be done anymore.

LOL I am the one who told you about. It's a great lens on par with the Nikon 17-55 2.8( I have both) the the 17-55 2.8 is heavy built like a tank pro quality however it's no better IQ wise then the 18-70 granted the 18-70 is slower(not 2.8) here is a sample from this lens & 70mm f5.6 ISO 100 D200 camera. This lens kicks the crap out of the 18-105 in IQ & build(metal mount)

I was the same FWIW. I reluctantly sold it once I had both an 18-200 and 18-105 as I then never used it again (and had upgraded to a D80, sold the D70, and was looking at getting a D90)... but wish I hadn't in some respects... But I do now have a 17-55 so not all bad news...

Everything you've heard about this lens is right, it's a fantastic lens and since there was not a lot of them made, it is a bit of a secret. I first encountered this lens when it came with my D70s and loved it. In fact, it's now the only DX lens I own and I can't imagine a reason I would ever get rid of it. Actually, I sometimes wonder if Nikkor made a mistake by making it such a fine lens and that's why they pulled it from production.
